“Style is the stuff that you made wrong.” A writer’s voice is what the reader respond to most, and one of the problems of young writer is you don't sound like anybody yet.
1. Start with Imitation
When starting out, you may just imitate if you see something you love. You start out by getting it wrong, but the most important thing is you do just write. Seeing your past was wonderful, you know your voice is there and you just need todo more writing.
2. Get the bad words out
Mistakes may be the most important thing to a writer. But how do you find them? That’s very easy cuz you do stuff. The process of trying to create something and so on is what you need to grow up. That’s huge. As a writer, and as a young writer, you job is to getting the bad words out, bad stories out to let the good things out. And you don’t ever get them out thinking”this is a bad story”, you may think it’s a great idea, but the most important thing is getting that out. You can write something that the critics don’t like or nobody reads, that’s okay. After you’vewritten 10,000 words, 50,000 words, 150,000 words, you will find your voice, it’s gonna be there anyway.
3. Finish things
Everything you do is to find your voice as a young writer. But the most important thing that will teach you who you’re isyou write and finish things if you can. I had probability several hundreds of first pages in my attic, I had some setups, characters and I wanna see what may happen, and I’d let them be sputtered, flamed out and that’s okay cuz I could just start another one. And at the age of 21 I started to realize I have to finish things, then the provement began to be quantum. Because as you finish things, you learn more from finishing a failure than you do from writing a success, and definitely more than you start something that’s fantastic but stop.
4. Find the voices of a story
You may notice the different feel or language of my stories,they could almost be noticed as written by different people.But there’s an uniformity there, not necessarily of the word choice or voice, it’s more about the attitude, the soul, the thing you take away from that story. If you’re a young writer or a writer trying to get a project getting out, just take a stab at it. Sit down and think about the most important things, does it feel like a first person or a third person? Who’s tellingyou the story? Does that matter who’s telling you the story?
The author is actually invisible, the story and voice is already there and you will do nothing more than drawing attention to yourself as a writer. There’re narrative voices, and they come to disappearing into the story. When using the third person narrative, the important thing becomes the voice of the narrator. At that point the voice you’re looking for isn’t particularly the writer’s voice, but the narrator’s voice. It’s quite convincing, like someone holding your hand saying" let’s walk into the dark places". That’d be a fun one to imitate.
